Pirate Ship

I was learning about nets for 3D shapes.
This is a pirate ship and we needed to make the nets to make the shapes for our pirate ship.
I felt good about this learning because I understood it.
It helped that I was in a group with some of my friends.
My next step is to be a bit more patient and try to work with some new people.

Biosphere

Biosphere 2000

This is our Biosphere. It was fun to paint it and make the furniture.

It was hard to make the beds and the trees.
It was easy to make the shelves and gardens.

Show don't Tell

I was learning how to write a show don't tell story to add inference to my writing
This writing was easy for me because I have done this kind of writing before
It helped that I had done this style of writing before because I already knew how to do it
My next step is to try different styles of writing

Making Predictions

My Speech

WALT write and present a speech
I don't like presenting speeches but I liked writing mine
It was hard to get the right time because you have to get it around 3 minutes
I got stuck when I had to write about Methylxanthines because I had to keep scrolling up and down to find out how to spell it
I could probably write my conclusion a bit better

Diary Post T3W1

This was the first week back at school and it was jam-packed with exciting things to do and see
We  did cross country, bike skills and lots of other things.
I am only going to tell you about some.

On Monday we did things to prepare us for camp.
We needed to hold on to a skipping rope and run up to some cones and beanbags.
Then we needed to balance them on our heads and walk.
If one of the cones fell off one of our heads then we all had to go to the beginning.

On Tuesday we had cross country.
We needed to run from the shade area, around the playground, past rooms 12 13 and 14, out of the school gates, down the alley way, across the bridge continue down the alley way, around the block and back again. I don't like cross country.

On Wednesday we had bike skills.
We had to ride around the court without our feet touching the ground. I thought it would be easy but it was kind of hard since the instructor kept making us switch directions and we were crashing into us.
I also got the small bike so I was pedaling and my knees were literally up to my ears.
My bike seat was to low down and Kieran told me that I looked like an Olympic biker because I was leaning down to get to the

Diary Post T2W8

Diary Post T2W8

This week we have been doing lots!

The first thing you need to know is Terrific Tuesday.

I may have told you about this in my last post but in this post I am going to explain it in more detail so you understand.

Terrific Tuesday is when you go to a different classroom to learn something new.

There are 6 different classes that you can go to.

They are:

  • Science
  • Vintage Games
  • Board games
  • Art
  • Putiputi (Making flax flowers)
  • Japanese

You are supposed to choose up to 3, and the teacher puts you in 1 of your preferences.

I chose:
  • Japanese
  • Board games and
  • Art!
I got put in number 2.

 Which is board games.

Mrs P, (The teacher) calls it co-operative games.

The second thing I am going to tell you is about this new book we have been reading as a class.

It is called the Green Book.

It is about this group of people that have moved out of earth to live on a new planet called shine because the earth and the sun were dying.

They could only bring 4 things each and a book.

We are reading this because we are learning about the Solar System and what would happen if the earth suddenly became uninhabitable or unsafe for us to live on.

It's very interesting to read.

That is all for now but I will be back with more interesting stuff in the next one or two weeks!!!

Diary post T2W4

This week at school we have been doing Agamographs.
Agamographs are when you take two pictures, say, a dragon and a bunny, and you make it look like the dragon is turning in to a bunny. Here is how we did it:
  • We figured out what pictures we were going to draw.
  • We drew the pictures.
  • We got some cardboard and folded it in to a consatina fold.
  • We ruled and cut up our drawings.
  • We stuck our cut up drawings on to the consatina fold and then...
  • WE HAD OUR ART!
We have also been doing heaps of other stuff but I will only tell you about 1 more.

We have started this thing called SDL.
SDL is when we have a slideshow and it tells us all of the things we need to do over the course of the week.
We usually have things like:
  • Handwriting
  • Spelling
  • Writing
  • Maths (We usually have 2 math ones. A fractions one and a problem solving one.)
All that kind of stuff.

I will tell you more next week.
Bye!!!

Alyssa and Zoe Maths Evidence

Reflection
We were learning about equivalent fraction, adding fractions with different denominators, and adding fractions with the same denominator.
It was hard because you have to change the denominator if they are different, to the same number.
I got stuck when we had to change them.
I could probably do a different strategy next time.
My next step is to think more deeply about this and show some more strategies.

Grid Value Portrait

Grid Value Portrait

WAL (We are learning) About value in art: - We learnt how to make light and dark pictures light and dark.

Last term we did grid value portraits.
Grid value portraits are a picture that is made of patterns.

These are the steps.
  • We studied Chuck Close. Chuck Close is the artist we were inspired by.                                         He was born on the 5 May 1940.                                                                                                       He was dyslexic and had face-blindness                                                                                             He was partially paralysed
  • We took a line for a walk. We got a piece of paper and literally scribbled on it.
  • Then we drew light and dark patterns in the loops. To make the dark patterns we put lots of small things close together and to make the light patterns we did big things that were not close together.
  • Then we had a little picture and we had to make it bigger.
  • Then we did the artwork!
I think that the hardest part was trying to enlarge the picture.
I think that the best part was doing all the patterns.

Persuasive Techniques in Commercials

I was learning how to use Persuasive Techniques.
We had to make an advertisement.
Zoe and I had to:

  • Make a slideshow
  • Film the testimonials and then put them on YouTube
  • Find images of fighting kids
  • Find the images of playing kids
  • Put them on the slideshow
  • Post the slide on my blog
The persuasive techniques were:
  • Testimonials
  • Expert opinion
  • Bandwagon
  • Emotional appeal
  • Slogan
  • Repetition
We used:
  • Slogan
  • Testimonials
  • Bandwagon
We could probably improve the Testimonials.

Diary Post Term 1 Week 7

Diary Post

Term 1 Week 7

This week has been awesome...

Here's why

P.E, Art, ICT, Writing and Reading will all be in this post!! :)

At school we are learning to define bias and prejudice.
We looked at a chapter of the Whale Rider story by Witi Ihimaera and we looked at bias bits in it.
We are already in part 3 of 4 parts!!! :D
(In the Whale Rider)

We have another class that come and buddy up with us and
we sometimes go to their class and they also (sometimes) come to our classroom.
We are teaching them some things on the laptops and computers.

For P.E, we are still doing Youthtown...
(Not much to say here :P)

For writing, we have learnt the writing process.

  1. Planning
  2. Drafting
  3. Revising and Sharing
  4. Type it up
  5. Edit (Spelling)
  6. Publish and Reflect

For Art, we are still doing the art I told you about BUT
mine is halfway finished!
So far I think most peoples art is halfway, One is finished and they are ALL
looking good.

I am really looking forward to the 5 day holiday we have for Easter and...
The best thing about Easter is... (We all know this!)

Maori Roles Explaination

Maori Roles

Have you ever.. Been to a Powhiri?
If You have then have you noticed that women always sit at the back?
I have. The Maori culture has VERY specific roles for men and women.

In the Maori culture the men are in the front when doing a haka.
This is because they want to protect the women. Why? Well if I were the only woman in the whole wide world, if I died then there would eventually be no more babies and that means that there would be no more people. Everyone will be extinct. The men are also the providers. They hunt, fish, garden and forage. Why? Because the women are all busy with the children and the house., they don’t have time!

But also, females have very important roles.
They need to look after the children. And also since teachers are usually ladies…
I mean seriously…    If it was your first day at school and as you were walking into your classroom…     and your teacher came out and started a haka and what’s more…      did a HUGE ukana at the end!! wouldn’t you be scared?!?!

Overall....   What I am trying to tell you is that women and men both have their own roles and duties and it is not sexist…

It is Tradition.

Reflection:

I was learning to write an explanation because we are reading the Whale Rider story.
I felt happy because it was REALLY easy.
I found it easy because we had some people around us helping us and reminding us what to do.
Next time, I need to use more technical words.

Whale Rider Chapter 8 Bias Highlighting

I was learning how to recognise bias.

This activity was easy. I had some other people helping me and before that, on the mat, Mrs G, some other people and I were talking about the bias bits.

The only hard bit was when there were some people saying that I was right and some were saying I was wrong and I didn't know what I should do. Leave it? Change it? I didn't know.

My next step is to do this on my own without even the smallest bit of help.

Venn Diagram

Reflection:

I was learning to make a venn diagram using 3 circles.
It was easy and boring because I couldn't think of any more... labels.
My next step is to make more labels and things.

Diary Post Term 1 Week 5

Diary Post

Term 1 Week 5

My first few weeks at school were pretty cool.
I am a year 6 now and I am really happy.

At school we are doing this awesome art project and we are learning about lots of different patterns. We are trying to make a self-portrait with patterns and shapes and we think that in the end it will look really cool. Mrs G took photos of us and we have to draw ourselves on a large piece of paper using patterns.
It is so fun.

We also have these people called Youthtown come to our school and teach us lots of different games, sports and activities. We go to Youthtown on Tuesdays. We have learnt a game called capture the flag and have been playing that a lot. You have to get the other teams ball and then they have to get it back. I had to tag people and some of my friends went in to the other teams territory and I had go save them. I thought that it was quite fun.

We have also been learning how to make music with our bodies.
That means with our arms, legs and our mouths.
We have also been learning how to read musical notes
such as a Minim, a Breve, a Semibreve and a Crochet.
I already knew all these ones so I found it easy.

We are ALSO reading a novel called the Whale Rider.
The Whale Rider (by Witi Ihimaera) is about a girl called Kahu, her Nanny and her Grandfather. They are Maori (The traditional language of New Zealand) and the Grandfather is descended from Kahutia-Te-Rangi, The Whale Rider.
I think it is quite a good book.

If these few weeks were that good... then I can't wait to see what will happen next week!!!
